I got you as a pup,
and you were here to stay.
Wild, crazy and hyper,
always ready to play.
Black, white and tan,
with short hair and big ears.
The runt with a stub tail,
I would love you for years.
You helped me through so much,
when life was looking bad.
You never left my side,
when I was feeling sad.
You were always there,
to lick away my tears.
I never had to worry,
you helped me with my fears.
As time went by you aged,
with dignity and grace.
Your fur got really grey,
especially around your face.
But you were still my friend,
the closest that I've had.
And that's the reason why,
I still remain so sad.
I knew when it was time,
your life had gotten rough.
I could see it in your eyes
your tired body had enough.
I talked to you all night,
never wanting to let go.
I hope you understood me,
for I wanted you to know.
How important in my life,
that you had grown to be.
I never would forget you,
you were so special to me.
I held you in my arms,
as you went to sleep.
I've never felt such pain,
it went so very deep.
Now that you are gone,
I'm feeling torn apart.
I have an empty space,
in the bottom of my heart.
It seems like it was short,
your time here on the earth.
More than 16 wonderful years,
since the time of your birth.
You're with me now in spirit,
this I know to be so true.
Why it's still so very hard,
I haven't got a clue.
I sob and cry sometimes,
so selfish do I feel.
But you're in Heaven now,
so I must start to heal.
My elderly gentleman, Dex,
our strong ties will not sever.
I'll never forget you, my friend,
not now or not forever.

Last week we lost a trusted friend. Our pony, Cody. He was my 15-year-old daughter's best friend, and we all loved him. I'm not sure what we will do without him in our lives. Cody was a huge part of our family and we will miss him forever.
Rest easily Cody...We love you.
